After guitarist Rudolf Schenker had already formed a school band with drummer Wolfgang Dziony in 1965, it was not until 1969, with the addition of Michael Schenker and Klaus Meine, that a serious band was formed, which gained regional recognition under the name Scorpions. Shortly afterwards, the hard rock band won a competition for young talent, followed by their debut album ‘Lonesome Crow’ in 1972. In the following years, the Scorpions succeeded in expanding and consolidating their reputation – in 1975, they even accompanied KISS on their tour of Europe. In the same year, their third album, ‘In Trance’, was released, which triggered a huge hype around the band, especially in Japan. But the Hanoverians were also popular in the USA, where they played as the opening act for bands such as Metallica, Iron Maiden and Bon Jovi. In 1981, singer Klaus Meine lost his voice during a world tour, but regained it thanks to vocal therapy and two vocal cord operations – for some fans and critics, it was even better than ever. In 1984, the Scorpions returned to the upper echelons of the charts with their album ‘Love at First Sting’. Five years later, Meine's composition ‘Wind Of Change’, which appeared on the eleventh album ‘Crazy World’, became the anthem of the fall of the Berlin Wall, remained number one in the charts for weeks and was also named the most successful track of 1991. In the 1990s, the Scorpions increasingly turned away from their wild sounds and concentrated instead on rock ballads. Despite their musical reorientation, the band headlined numerous festivals and always played to sold-out venues. In the new millennium, the group pursued projects such as the classical and rock crossover album ‘Moment Of Glory’ and the unplugged album “Acoustica”. With records such as ‘Unbreakable’, ‘Humanity Hour I’, ‘Sting in the Tail’ and the LP ‘Return to Forever’, released in 2015 to mark the band's 50th anniversary, the Scorpions have continued to attract attention over the years.
After several personnel changes, the band currently consists of founder Rudolf Schenker, Klaus Meine, Matthias Jabs, Paweł Mąciwoda and Mikkey Dee. Although the Scorpions are now considered oldies of the German music scene, their songs are still regulars on radio station playlists. Even after more than 60 years of band history, there is no end in sight for the Scorpions – apart from an announcement in 2013 that they were breaking up, which was quickly retracted.
